Neil McDiffie (b. 1687) of Argyll, Scotland. Summary. The family is known to have lived on the Ross of Mull, Argyll, Scotland, from at least the second generation onwards, perhaps initially drawn by the kelp industry. Their seven children (4m 3f) married there and at least some migrated to North America or Australasia. All lines of descent from the second generation parents have yet to be traced. In 1779 Neil was living at Knocknafenaig, Ross of Mull, Argyll, Scotland. He was listed as being 92 years old, with a wife also living. Summary. It is known that the family (Malcolm Mc/MacPhee, from Knocknafenaig & Ann McEachern from Fidden, per OPR marriage extract) came from their marital home (per OPR extracts of children's baptisms) of Knocknafenaig, Ross of Mull, Argyllshire in Scotland. They emigrated to Prince Edward Island, Canada in the early 1800s. (1820/21) Line to Most Recent non-living participant. 1.

Summary: The earliest evidence we have for an ancestral line to Scotland is John McDuffie (1755-1810),who emigrated from Scotland (from exactly which part of Scotland we are currently unsure) to North Carolina. In 1776, his spouse gave birth to a son also named John (1776-1850),who also resided in North Carolina. We are fairly certain of the above information although we cannot definitively verify its accuracy. What we can definitively prove is that John had a son, Alexander (1820-1897), who emigrated from North Carolina to Telfair County, GA and married Penelope Pickren (1832-1883). Among many daughters, Alexander had one son, John A. McDuffie (1859-1920), also of Telfair County, GA. John's thirteenth child, Rufus Henry McDuffie (1912-1982) of Preston, GA, is my grandfather. My father, Charles Henry McDuffie of Sautee, GA, will provide our sample. Line to Most Recent non-living participant: 1.
John McDuffie b1755 Scotland d1810 North Carolina Family Web Site: N/A Kit - #VMZ552 Oldest Proven Ancestor: Neil McPhee bc1781 Colonsay, Argylshire, Scotland Summary: This line is one of the most interesting as it is the only one which stretches from the distant past on Colonsay up to the present. As Colonsay is the ancestral home of the McPhees and formerly the McDuffies this is highly significant. There is every reason to believe that the forebears of Neil McPhee also lived on Colonsay and may have been McDuffies. It will be interesting to see which subsequent test results match with this "reference" result in the MacFie ancestral homeland. Line to Most Recent non-living participant: 1. Neil McPhee

Summary: John McFee (also once he signed as John McDuffee, and all his family changed their names to McDuffee after he died in 1752). John McFee and supposedly three of his brothers (perhaps cousins?) came to America in the 1720's. Descendants of the fifth brother came over somewhat later. Extensive genealogical research has been carried out on descendants of these families (over 1700 names). These men were probably grandsons (or sons?) of "Matchless" Martha McDuffee and her husband John McDuffee, who were in the siege of Londonderry, Northern Ireland, in 1689. John McFee settled in Rochester, NH. Daniel McDuffee (also called McFee very early on and not the same person as the Captain Daniel McDuffee in this line) settled in Londonderry, NH, as did his brother Archibald. Another brother Matthew apparently settled in MA. The fifth brother, Mansfield, emigrated from Northern Ireland to England, but his son William apparently came to America, probably to NJ. On 6/26/1759, he landed his forces opposite Quebec, which occupied the Heights of Abraham and was so fortified as to be almost impregnable. Wolfe scaled the precipitous cliffs during the night, and at daybreak of Sept. 13 forced the French into conflict on the Plains of Abraham. before 1802 (parish of Bracadale) and 1817 (in Duirinish), there is little chance of

no other known Macphies in the neighbouring Duirinish parish (at least not in the militia
records ? age group 14 to 45 years) so it may have only been a few families or even just a
few "warriors" retreating
to Skye after the defeat at Culloden to escape their pursuers. Certainly

I am one of the 6 remaining children. Any help would be appreciated in locating the nationality of James' wife Nancy and her burial site, also Catherine Nix's burial site. God willing and the Arizona creek don't rise (wet winter, ha ha) we will travel to Minnesota and visit relatives in Canada, Nova Scotia and the New England states. In our trip to Scotland and Colonsay last May we didn't find out much before 1772 in the Inverness Library. It seems that John McPhee (1725) is not related to James McPhee (1758) However they both came to America on the same ship in 1775. Some genealogists say he provably not a son as John (1725) didn't claim him for the land grant. My theory was that he was old enough and had served in the 84th and was able to get his one land. However this DNA test has shown them not to be father and son. I also have extensive research on John McPhee (1725) born in Easter Bunloit, Scotland where we also visited. I cannot find parents for either John 1725 or James 1758. John's first child he claimed for extra land was Evan 1760 so James could still be the first born Line to Most Recent non-living participant: 1.

We know not who Donald or when he was born, or who he married , but he is considered a crofter. 2. Norman Macphee, of Parish Milwaig, Skye was one of Donald's 8 sons. Norman is my paternal gg grandfather. Norman married Annie [Margaret?] BRUCE born ca 1840 Parish Milwaig, Skye. One story tells that Donald's son Norman died at sea, while fishing. How he left us, though, is much in doubt. [The Macphee's have no great love for the open ocean, and none are natural swimmers. You may remember the story in John McPhee's the Crofter and the Laird where the Colonsay Macphee expresses as much as they snag lobsters off Oronsay at low tide.] Norman and Annie/Margaret (BRUCE) Macphee had: Neil; Malcolm;Flora;Effie;Mary; Angus. 3. Angus Macphee, born in 1862 Glendale, Skye. Angus is my paternal great grandfather. Computing from Flora's information, both his grandfather and father would be 34 respectively, which fits the time frame. Anyway, around 1880, Angus left Skye at a relatively wee age to seek his fortune with a railway job in Kilmarnock, then a transport hub. He left speaking only Gaelic, but shortly acquired English through self-teaching and went on to be a prolific reader and supporter of education. I read a letter he sent to my father, his grandson, in Canada. The writing is immaculate. He was a signalman on the railway, and progressed to the control house. Angus married Annie Minto Clara Wilson ORR at Bellesland farm, Kilmaurs, June 26, 1890. Angus 1862 died 9/01/1932 Kilmarnock. Annie died July 4, 1928, aged 60 years. They had 5 Macphee children: Norman, 1891; David "Davie" Archibald Macphee, 1893-1980; Margaret Bruce; 1898; Douglas Wallace, 1899-1994; and Hector Alexander, 1904-1904. 4. Davie Macphee, born in Kilmarnock 1893, died Prince Rupert, BC 1980. He is my paternal grandfather. Davie moved to Springburn Glasgow where he worked on the Clyde in shipbuilding. I suspect there would have been some relatives there, but there are also pictures I have of relatives that came to visit. Davie married 11/10/1916 Established Church Scotston, Glasgow to Mary Stewart McROBBIE born 6/03/1896 Paisley, SCT. Mary's parents: William and Margaret (DALGARNO) MacROBBIE; Mary's grandparents: James MacROBBIE; John and Massie (MILLER) DALGARNO. Davie, Mary and their son Angus Macphee left Scotland around 1926, and went to Prince Rupert, BC, Canada to be with in-laws who were active in the construction industry. [That is how you and your family became acquainted with my grandfather Davie. And thus you know my father, Angus who worked at the pulp mill with your father, and then you and I met in high school, and again at a fishing plant.] 5. Angus Macphee, born in Springburn. Glasgow April 1917. Angus is my father. He married 1941 Prince Rupert, BC to Dora Phylis ARNEY born 1919. [Angus was National President of the PPWC, affiliated to the CCU]. Angus and Dora Macphee's children: Ennis, 1943, now GREENE ; David, 1947; Margaret, 1951, now HANDEL; Norman, 1955. Seven grandchildren: 3 Macphee; two GREENE; 2 HANDEL. 6. Norman Macphee 1955 Prince Rupert, BC. 7. Ian David Austin Macphee 1990. Ottawa, ON, Canada. I would be most interested for the further details on the above. I see that Flora has added some background to Donald's marriage and birth and death. Here's what I found; recorded below with, hopefully, no transcription errors on my part: COLONSAY, SCT 1841 p3 of 25 Ardskenish Parish Katrine McFEE female, age 60. p8 0f 25 Scalisaig Parish Hugh McFEE male, age 20, male servant p9 of 25 Killoran Parish Ann McFEE f 15 female servant p14 of 25 Uriguig Parish Duncan McFEI m 60 Agricultural Labourer Margreat McFEI f 60 Archibald McFEI m 25 Jannet McFEI f 25 Neil McPhee m 60 Army Private Catherine McPhee f 40 Donald McPhee m 3 Angus McPhee m 1 Dolly McCalder f 12 p15 of 25 Uriguig Parish John McFEE m 20 Male Servant North Moor Parish Donald McFEE m 40 Agricultural Labourer Malcolm McFEE m 10 Neil McFEE m 7 p22 of 25 Killichattan Parish Donald McFEE m 60 Agricultural Labourer Catherine McFEE f 55 Angus McFEE m 25 Agricultural Labourer Jean McFEE f 25 Donald McFEE m 1 Mary McFAYDEN f 20 Riskbuie Parish Malcolm McFEE m 55 Agricultural Labourer Ann McFEE f 50 Donald McFEE m 20 Catherine McFEE f 15 Peggy McFEE f 15 Mary McFEE f 14 Gilbert LERK m 9 p24 of 25 Riskbuie Parish Donald McFEE m 55 Agricultural Labourer Marry McFEE f 50 Peggy McFEE f 20 Jennet McFEE f 15 John McFEE m 14 Donald McFEE m 12 Mary McFEE f 5 Note: p21 of 25 Killichattan Parish also lists Dugald McDUFFIE and seven family members. Note: I did not see any listings for: BRUCE; ORR; McROBBIE families on this 1841 Colonsay census. Note: Flora's and Lorn's ancestors, Donald and Pegy (nee McLUGASH) McNEILL family appear p9 of 25 Scalisaig Parish where Donald was listed age 35, Shoe Maker. I was reading on your yDNA site that you had Prince Edward Island MacPhee's in the project (or persons whose ancestors settled there). I'm a McDonald (last known ancestor is James R. McDonald of Kings County, Prince Edward Island, b. 1818). His wife was Catherine McPhee (b.c1824). We believe she was the Catherine McPhee of Aberdeen Road, first cousin to Roddy Joe McPhee and therefore, most likely the daughter of Angus McPhee (b. 1802, d. 1874 Selkirk, Kings Co., PEI) and Ann McDonald (of Big Donald group, Souris Line Road, Kings Co., PEI). Angus McPhee is the son of Archibald (Ronnie Archie) McPhee (b. 1768 Scotland, d. 1828) and Mary McCormack. Archibald 'Ronnie Archie' McPhee and Mary McCormack had the following children: ii. MARY (#5066). She was baptized 18 January 1810 ("Roman Catholic Book"). iii. ANGUS (#4933) was born 1802. Angus died 20 April 1874 in Selkirk, at 71 years of age. He married ANN MACDONALD . (Ann MacDonald is #5064.) Ann was born 1804. Ann died 1844 at 40 years of age. Sarah was d/o Donald of Souris Line Road. Homesteaded with brother Joseph at Bear River before 1874. 3 iv. ARCHIBALD 'ARCHIE BAN' was born 1806 4 v. JOSEPH 'RED JOE' was born 1812 5 vi. RONALD was born 1816 I was wondering if you could forward this email to your PEI members? I would appreciate it, if it is possible. I've also transcribed a related MacPhee document, which a friend, also a MacPhee/Macdonald of PEI (but lot 55 rather than my lots 42, 43, 44), scanned when she was in Salt Lake City doing research. It may be of interest to some of the PEI researchers. It's also posted on the Island Register webpage. http://www.islandregister.com/landrecords/1857mcphee.html Submitted by Bernie McPhee When,
after his marriage to Charlotte MacArthur in 1826, John Inverary McPhee went to live at
Killiechonate in Lochaber, he was in the household of the MacDONELLS at that
residence. (We might note that Donald MacArthur of Limestone Ridge in The
MacDONELL at that residence was John MacDonell Killichonate commonly called John Dubh
Aberarder, and his wife Catherine most interestingly was the daughter of Colonel Alexander
MacDonell Keppoch, who was killed at the Battle of Culloden. Catherine died at the
age of 90, three years after John Inverary McPhee had moved to Killiechonate. Why is
all this important? Because in our family there was the saying: "Remember the
MacDonells of Keppoch", or in another way of saying it: "Remember that you are
related to the MacDonells of Keppoch." Killiechonate
is a long standing residence for MacDonells of Keppoch. Stuart Macdonald in his Back
to Lochaber The Pentland Press Edinburgh 1994, notes that families in Lochaber had
been there in roughly the same places for centuries. McPhee
had been connected with MacDonell from the very beginning in Lochaber. As far back
as about 1400, a certain Miss McPhee who was the daughter of McPhee of Glen Spean, married
the 2nd Chief of Keppoch MacDonells and thence she was to become the mother of
two Keppoch Chiefs (the third and fifth Chiefs), and the grandmother of two Keppoch Chiefs
(the fourth and sixth Chiefs) and the mother in law of the first Captain of Clan
Cameron, Allan of the Raids, who built the Chapel at the Cemetery of Cille Choirill in
Lochaber. The MacDonells were entrenched in Lochaber, on both sides of the And
here in 1841 we have John Inverary McPhee living a charmed life, as were other McPhee
families in Lochaber, those who were still under the special patronage or protection of
the remnant of the MacDonells of Keppoch, and under the protection of the Camerons, until
in 1853, after the death of his wife Charlotte MacArthur, John Inverary McPhee brought all
his seven children to Australia. In 1841, according to the Census of that year, there were 337 MacPhee
people in 45 family groups and others singly, registered as living in Lochaber, and most
of them were still there in 1851. Eighty per cent of all these MacPhees were registered as
having been born in the area in which they were found to be living in 1841. Six of these
337 MacPhee people were born in the 1750s. It
was only later, in the years 1852 to 1855 that Lochaber lost hundreds of McPhee emigrants

Joining the project When you join this project you will need to provide as much detail as you can about your direct male ancestral line (see the example above). Try to include place of origin in Scotland and/or a country of destination. Mention occupation if there is a common thread and the most common male first names; these are often transmitted from generation to generation and can discriminate one distinct line from another. (Feel free to write a couple paragraphs, but dont paste in a long genealogy report. Feel free to speculate, but label this as speculation. Pay particular attention to anything that might help link unassociated lines. The details you provide will be added to this page. Do not put anything that is sensitive, personal, or you do not feel comfortable posting! Email your genealogy details to rodmac @ digisurf.com.au (remove spaces).
